Theory and practice of pet feeding
The epigraph of this work is the statement of a specialist in the field of animal feeding for a reason. This phrase reflects the whole essence of the problem of feeding animals and is the main rule of feeding any animals (and humans). This is especially true for highly specialized species of animals, such as herbivores and carnivores, since mixotrophophores (bear, pig, and… man) are characterized by a diverse diet, but at the same time they also have their own laws of norms and quality of food consumed.
The reason for writing this article was the ongoing discussion about what to feed dogs and cats, what diet is better for them. Although we must pay tribute to most of the issues and problems of feeding — the merit of manufacturers of ready-made commercial feed and nothing more.
Before we begin to consider the issues of dog feeding, we will make a small historical excursion concerning dog nutrition.
According to approximate historical data, a dog lives next door to a human for about 50,000 years, i.e. a person feeds a dog for many thousands of years. The question of how canines have survived without the commercial food and why they were healthier than current animal? Feed has only been available for the last 40-50 years and it is in recent decades that there has been an increase in the number of chronic animal diseases, when it is almost impossible to find a healthy pet. This is noticed by the owners themselves, whose dogs did not get sick so hard and hard 20 or 30 years ago, when, without having had time to be born, the puppy wanders around Moscow clinics in vain search of a solution to a health problem.
Since in this paper we do not set the goal of criticizing and overthrowing commercial feed as a class, but discuss various aspects of pet feeding, the reader should also understand some of the positive aspects of ready – made high-quality feed. They are as follows:
In some incurable diseases, when the doctor is not able to solve the problem, ready-made food can minimize the external symptoms of the disease, thereby ensuring a normal life for the sick animal. Such conditions can include, for example, persistent intestinal atony in cats and dogs, when the animal’s unwillingness to consume raw fiber (especially in cats with a meat diet), does not allow the doctor to cope with the pathology with natural nutrition. Other incurable conditions of the intestine and other organs and organ systems.
I would like to note that we are talking about incurable diseases, and not about severe pathology that the doctor does not want to treat. This is how doctors abuse “therapeutic” feeds, adapting the animal to the pathology, because of the reluctance to treat it.
Here it is necessary for owners and doctors to understand the concept of “Medicinal food”. In fact, there is not a single medicinal food that would cure any disease. By analogy with the diet of a person, where the diet only improves the course of a particular disease, and almost never cures it. So limiting protein food for gout will never cure gout itself (metabolic disorders in the form of uric acid diathesis persist). Restricting food for obese people will never cure the main cause of obesity (hormonal disorders or psychosomatic disorders). An Allergy will never go away if you exclude an allergen from your diet. All these measures improve the condition, and no one claims that they are not necessary. But the reader should have an idea of what medical food is. This knowledge will allow you to understand that the disappearance of any symptom when transferred to dietary food is not a cure, but an adaptation, a temporary (even long-term) disappearance of a painful sign. With further latent progression of the main pathology, the disease can take even more severe forms.
2. Convenience is an undeniable advantage. But even here, the owners are being abused. If the food is dry and does not spoil too quickly, being for a long time in the bowl, it means that the bowl should always be with food. In most of these cases, the animals overeat.
Next, each of the issues related to feeding will be raised separately. This will allow you to have a clear answer to your question.
